Teacher’s are never going to like being held accountable it’s just that simple. They went decades without being expected to prove they are teaching the kids, decades collecting a salary and benefits, decades with many, many perks.   Everyone  in any occupation has to prove they are doing their job, why should teachers be any different?  The party is over.   Evansville as many other schools across the state and country have a lot of work to do , it comes from years of just getting by , and never being held accountable.  Yes its a big goal to climb but if they had done what they should have done all along, which is showing progress, this would not be a big goal at all.  Just an ant hill.

It does not matter if it was a group of teacher’s who created common core, those who were not part of creating it would find a problem with it. They just do not want to be held accountable.

The Evansville School district FAILS to keep the really good teachers. Ms. Ellie Habrel is gone. A huge loss.

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 30, 2013 by chasinthenews

The Evansville school district has lost quite a few teachers over the last two years.   Most left for greener pastures.

BUT  to lose a teacher like  Ms. Ellie Haberl is just truly sad.   She was the best , one of the few really good teachers Evansville had left.    How did I find out about this?

Her mom teaches at Madison West.    I was saddened and shocked to learn Ms. Haberl had left the Evansville school district, not that one can blame her.

We now know where Ms. Haberl got so much of her talent and love of teaching..  Her parents.    Her mom is just awesome.

Her mom subs at Madison West.   I wish she taught full time there.   She is just a wonderful lady and a great teacher.

Evansville schools just continue to go down hill..  growing open enrollment number, loss of the really good teachers.

Evansville residents are paying attention as is shown by the open enrollment numbers.  NO one is ‘ stuck’ anymore in a district that is not working.

Evansville just does not seem to be able to understand that, as is shown by their lack of investigation into this.

Madison West Is A AWE SOME SCHOOL.

AS all of you who follow this blog know I find the Evansville school district less than impressive, troubling, and just a general pain in the asx.   They fight parents on every turn trying to think they known more than the parents.   They fail to listen,  they fail to make changes when its proven their plan is not working.  They allow bullying .   They put sports before academics.   They just flat-out do not want parent involvement especially at the high school.

After years of fighting with them to get decent programming for our daughter we pulled her from the Evansville school district and she worked online and with a tutor.  Evansville high school administration had given up on her.     Example:   Algebra.   They could not get her to understand and do algebra.    The tutor we hired had her doing algebra within two months of working with her.  He did not give up.  She blossomed with his help and has much more confidence with math now.    After the many discussions and fights with the administration and after pulling her from the school we had to think long and hard .   Do we want our son going to that high school, where incompetence flows through the halls by one to many staff and administration?

Our son does really well in school.   He needs to be challenged.   Some thing Evansville does not do.    The last straw really was when we went to register him for classes at the Evansville High school and there was very little for him to choose from, that interested him.   IF HE had his way he would have taken three gym classes this year because there was so little to choose from.  The curriculum at that high school has changed very little in the last five years .( when our oldest graduated.)   In fact they have less to offer than they did five years ago.

My daughter and I had already checked out several Madison Schools.   WE had a long talk with our kids.    With our daughter being a senior this year, and our son a freshman we asked them how they would feel about changing schools.    YOU would have thought  our son would be very upset about leaving his friends and the only school he has ever known.   HE WAS NOT.    HE was very excited about the change.     I was shocked.    But then , and only then did he started telling me about some things that went on at school.    He is not a complainer or whiner or tattle tail and after hearing about the things that went on,  I wish he was.

SO in early JULY we registered our kids at Madison West.     I am so super impressed.    THE  Curriculum rocks!!    IT’S  a damn book of classes to choose from.   They have honor classes which they placed my son in several of those, and they have advanced classes as well.   The number of honors and advanced classes in just incredible.   I am so excited for both of our kids the opportunities are endless at that school.

They also need more math and science to graduate,  why would you not in this day and age require 4 years of science and math and English.

The teacher’s we have met our just up beat, creative, and positive.    UNLIKE some teacher’s in Evansville who you would swear had just come from the dentist, who always have a negative feel to them.

Each student is assigned a counselor and associate principal.   For a school of around 2000 , each student counts and they keep a close eye on all.

ONE of the best parts????     THE class sizes!!!    They are between 20-23 per class.    THE SAME as Evansville.    IN  fact in Evansville some classes are bigger than that.    That is just so impressive.

LETS NOT forget the academic clubs after school.   They have more  clubs than sports programs imagine that!!!!

They also have tutoring offered.   Why does Evansville not do some thing like that?   Because teacher’s want to be gone at 3:15, that is why.   They do not want to have to be responsible for organizing youth tutoring programs,  or teacher tutoring programs.

I am just so excited for our kids.   It is such a big, pleasant change from the failings of the Evansville school district.

After seeing what West, and Middleton and Memorial have to offer  Evansville just can not compete.

Madison is a short drive away,  I know of several families who drive their kids to Madison daily for school.

I wish we had done this sooner.

They most certainly will get a better education at WEST  than anything we could have hoped for in Evansville.

Our kids are so excited and so are we.    Just a good , positive  change.

DO not let teacher’s or administration blame poverty.

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 2, 2013 by chasinthenews

What should be the proper reply when teacher’s and administrators try to use that excuse?    BALONEY because it’s just a excuse.   Especially for here in Evansville.

When I called Rock County Social Services they told me Evansville has less than 1% home less people.    Their definition of home less is having no where to sleep at night.

That is not to say there is not poverty in Evansville.   There is .    But our administration and  several teachers I have listened to have tried to blame poor test scores on poverty.  Baloney.

IT”S  the attitude of the teacher’s.    Some have given up and do not think they have to try.    Times have changed.  IF they want to keep their jobs they will have to start showing results.  Poverty or not.    I know of several kids who would be labeled ” poverty level. ”   They happen to be high honor and honor roll students..   So poverty does not mean squat.

Many kids who live in poverty want out of that life style , want more and they work very , very hard.      Evansville is NOT Madison, or even Janesville , Beloit where poverty and bad attitude  at times can seem over whelming.    Evansville teacher’s have no idea what it really means to teach a class where a 1/4 of them are living in poverty or homeless.

Those Evansville teacher’s who tried to blame poor test scores on poverty should be a shamed of them selves.   They have no idea.

The attitude and moral of teacher’s has been crap the last two years and yes it effects how well they do their job.   IT RUBS off on the kids.    IF teacher’s can whine and complain, and make excuses so can we.

Poverty can not be used as an excuse or Evansville schools will continue to fail.

Carie Charlesworth, Teacher, Fired After Being Domestically Abused

It’s good to be safe. But this was not her fault. It’s  a shame she is being punished because her husband likes to beat on her.  I hope they keep him locked up for a long time.  Enough time for her to move where he has no idea where they are.

Heidi Carvin. I Apologize.

Better the devil you know..

Be careful what you wish for..

When Jerry Roth took over as superintendent I was excited to think ~~Finally some one with new ideas.  Who will make positive changes.”~~     So far he has failed.

What he has managed to do is tie up his contract for the next year, before the teachers.

Turn teachers against administration.   Attempt to turn teachers against the board, put the board against the administration.   He has and is slowly trying to make it a hostile work environment and other.

He would like the teachers to believe its the boards fault the district is in the place its in.    It is not.

I will state again , as I have before the administrations contracts should not have been done before the teachers.   That they should not have done.   Not with the budget like it is.

Administration k~12 has failed to come to the board with any real plan for the budget.   Kind of the same crap they came to the board with last year at this time.

He is making Heidi Carvin look damn good as an administrator.

Mandatory after school home work time at the J.C. Mckenna ???? Who is responsible?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , on May 6, 2013 by chasinthenews

A couple weeks ago I and other 8 th grade parents received a email from Mr.Flaherty .  Principal at J.C.Mckenna middle school.     He stated in this email if your child had home work that was not done they from now on would be required to stay after school on Thursday nights and do their home work.

Really?   Over stepping just a bit there Mr.Flaherty?     Evidently the 6th and 7 th graders have lived with this all year.

The fact is Mr.Flaherty did over step.   He does not have the authority to order such a thing.  Because quite frankly SCHOOL HOURS are spelled/printed very clearly in the hand book .  Students are required to be there during those hours.   HOW EVER NOT doing your home work in not a  PUNISHABLE OFFENSE.    ITS NOT UP to MR.Flaherty to make sure kids do their  home work.

IN FACT more and more teachers are telling students at the JUNIOR HIGH and the HIGH SCHOOL that home work really does not count for any thing.    Some teachers do not even put a grade on home work at the high school ,  SO WHY should students put the time and effort in if they get nothing for it.  KIDS need to see some thing for their effort even if its minimal.  The fact that home work helps them prepare for tests and helps them to remember things does not compute with most of these kids.

GOOD GRIEF… QUIT TELLING THESE KIDS HOME WORK DOES NOT COUNT.

But what it really comes down to is parents are not making sure their kids are doing their home work.    That does not give Mr.Flaherty the right to step in,  but where are these parents?

So there is blame to go around parents need to be tracking their kid’s school obligations better and teachers need to stop telling students home work does not count.  It all counts.

Really this just shows how desperate the teachers and Mr.Flaherty are at the Junior High.  Because according to over 60% of the NCLB,/Common core results these students are not showing yearly gains or scoring at advanced or proficient.   This is not on the parents.   This is because of no   game plan by administration.   They are failing.

****  I have talked with several of the parents of 8th graders my son’s friends.  NO one has gotten a call about their child staying after on Thursday nights.   So either my son and all his friends do their home work or this is all just b.S.  by the Junior High.    The way it was explained to me it falls on each teacher to have the child stay, and guess what these teachers do not want to put in the time any more than the students do.

Teacher sues Wis. college over union negotiations

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , on May 2, 2013 by chasinthenews

There is a very thin line between talking about working conditions and pay, and negotiations.   ALL schools have to be very careful not to cross that line.    Until a court says other wise it is the law.

Common Core Stakes Moratorium Proposed By Unions As National Standards Face Backlash

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 2, 2013 by chasinthenews

So there is/was back against the W.K.C.E. testing , now there is back lash against the National Standards?  So to put it quite simply teachers and schools to not want to be held accountable and do not like any thing that shows what they are or are not doing.

Schools nationwide have had plenty of time to get their acts together.

I however do not think it would hurt to give them more time, with the understanding if given more time like the two years.   There will be no grace periods or excuses after that.

I look at the Evansville School District and realize with out some major changes they are not going to make the  current deadline to get every one to proficient or advanced.

A good part of that is ATTITUDE the attitude right now by teachers in the EVANSVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT sucks.    Morale is low.   There are a lot of changes coming and they do not like it.

Take a look at PARKVIEW AND ALBANY who both are smaller schools with less money than Evansville .  YET they are winning awards for academic success .

IT goes to prove it does not take MONEY to achieve academic success.    IT takes good administrators and teachers with a good plan which I absolutely do not believe Evansville has one.

Some of the work that my 8th grade son has done this year has been nothing but busy work.   Especially in READING.   It’s like they do not have a clue about how to reach the goals they need to reach.

I WILL ALSO POINT OUT TO PEOPLE AND ASK,,, WHY do we have a remedial reading class at the high school?     By the time kids get to the high school for both MATH and READING THEY should be ready to rock n roll…  THAT is ridiculous  that by the 9th grade we still have students who do not read at grade level.  By this time the school has had our students for 9 years, what the heck are they doing with them during all that time that they can not read and do math at grade level?

IF you question them on it as I have.   They find a way to blame the parents.    The fact that many students do not show yearly gains is unacceptable.     Just for the reasons I have given show why it is so very important that our schools and teachers be held accountable.

NO one else gets to collect a pay check and benefits without showing results teachers have to be held to the same standards.
