Very cool.  It’s nice to see a teacher trying some thing new to engage students.   Good for him.

Melissa reports on the board meeting from last night.

I have to agree with her there sure was a lot of information on sports ( re-assigning of coaches and pay) a lot of nonsense about sports.    She’s right it says a lot about their lack of priorities.     I do have to wonder why the issue with the music program at the Junior High?

Frankly I do not think music or art should be required classes after grade school.   It is just silly to make kids take art if they are not interested.   Offer it, but do not make it a requirement.

Thank you Melissa.   Good to see you back.

Mandatory after school home work time at the J.C. Mckenna ???? Who is responsible?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , on May 6, 2013 by chasinthenews

A couple weeks ago I and other 8 th grade parents received a email from Mr.Flaherty .  Principal at J.C.Mckenna middle school.     He stated in this email if your child had home work that was not done they from now on would be required to stay after school on Thursday nights and do their home work.

Really?   Over stepping just a bit there Mr.Flaherty?     Evidently the 6th and 7 th graders have lived with this all year.

The fact is Mr.Flaherty did over step.   He does not have the authority to order such a thing.  Because quite frankly SCHOOL HOURS are spelled/printed very clearly in the hand book .  Students are required to be there during those hours.   HOW EVER NOT doing your home work in not a  PUNISHABLE OFFENSE.    ITS NOT UP to MR.Flaherty to make sure kids do their  home work.

IN FACT more and more teachers are telling students at the JUNIOR HIGH and the HIGH SCHOOL that home work really does not count for any thing.    Some teachers do not even put a grade on home work at the high school ,  SO WHY should students put the time and effort in if they get nothing for it.  KIDS need to see some thing for their effort even if its minimal.  The fact that home work helps them prepare for tests and helps them to remember things does not compute with most of these kids.

GOOD GRIEF… QUIT TELLING THESE KIDS HOME WORK DOES NOT COUNT.

But what it really comes down to is parents are not making sure their kids are doing their home work.    That does not give Mr.Flaherty the right to step in,  but where are these parents?

So there is blame to go around parents need to be tracking their kid’s school obligations better and teachers need to stop telling students home work does not count.  It all counts.

Really this just shows how desperate the teachers and Mr.Flaherty are at the Junior High.  Because according to over 60% of the NCLB,/Common core results these students are not showing yearly gains or scoring at advanced or proficient.   This is not on the parents.   This is because of no   game plan by administration.   They are failing.

****  I have talked with several of the parents of 8th graders my son’s friends.  NO one has gotten a call about their child staying after on Thursday nights.   So either my son and all his friends do their home work or this is all just b.S.  by the Junior High.    The way it was explained to me it falls on each teacher to have the child stay, and guess what these teachers do not want to put in the time any more than the students do.

Teachers Cheat, Too! | TEACHERSCOUNT BLOG

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , on April 25, 2013 by chasinthenews

Several days ago TeachersCount Blog did a story on the rise in students cheating.   Well some students have always cheated since the beginning of actual schools. There are always going to be those who cheat.

So I asked a question to them on their blog ~~~~What about when teacher’s cheat?   As in the last few years we are hearing more and more about teacher’s cheating to raise test scores and make them selves and their school look better.~~~

So I was very impressed that they took the time to address this issue.

Regardless of who is doing the cheating its not acceptable on either side.   But we expect better from adults.

The amount of Evansville’s students who tested at proficient or advanced not so hot…no surprise.

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 23, 2013 by chasinthenews

The state average of students who tested at proficient or advanced was 36.1 %.    Average scored only 40.4 % of Evansville’s students tested at proficient or advanced on the  W.K.C.E. testing, or what ever they call it now.     Evansville scored only 40.4%   at proficient or advanced.   These numbers come straight from the Wisconsin Department of public instruction.    Those numbers suck.    WE do not even have  half our students at proficient  or advanced.    Not even half.

That really is horrible and nothing to be proud of .     These teacher and administration should be embarrassed.  They are leaving a lot of kids behind.

Year after year of poor test scores.    Year after year of kids getting left behind.

Some times bad things happen. Some times the bad thing is called Gov.Walker

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 20, 2013 by chasinthenews

Some times bad things happen.   When some thing unfortunate happens in your life what do you do?   Do you pick your self up, dust your self off and decide which path to take to make things o.k. again, to adapt to the changes that have come into your life  or do you sit around complaining and have a nice ” poor me” party.

Over the last several months I  have been asked which side am I on the Union workers (public and teachers) or on Walker’s side/team.

I have made it very clear  I did not originally vote for Gov. Walker.   I signed the recall petition .  I voted against him in the recall election.  Pretty simple.   I will not vote for him when he runs again.   Snoopy could be his opponent and I would not vote for him.

HOW EVER  Gov. Walker’s approval ratings are now at 50%.    I think that’s the highest it’s ever been.

What  I am tired of is the attitude we are finding in our schools.    I DO NOT WANT TEACHERS OR STAFF BITCHING ABOUT ACT 10 TO THE STUDENTS.   MOST parents do not.   Unfortunately that is exactly what is happening.  Students are hearing way to much about the troubles of the teachers and the challenges they are facing.

Over the years I do not how many times I have heard teacher’s  preach  ” some times bad things happen, you have to decide to rise above it.”    or  ” some times you may have to work with some one you do not like, get over it.”    These are just the start of examples of things I have heard some say.    The point being is teachers preach, preach, preach, about adjusting to bad things that happen in your life.

How ever teachers in the Evansville School district are doing a poor job of doing what they preach.    I realize moral is low , but come on it’s been two-year since ACT 10 came into play.   TWO YEARS.

Do you know how many people in the private sector are still not working?  Do know how many people in the private sector have lost benefits completely ?   Have had hours cut?    Have not gotten raises well before this ” recession” ?

So to hear teacher’s still whining and fretting is just old.   They are embarrassing themselves.

They need to pick them selves up, dust them selves off and adapt like everyone has.   They need to follow the advice they give their students.

Maybe down the road ACT 10 will be thrown out all together.     It very well may be.     But it will never go back to where things were.   There is just no un-ringing that bell.

Administration in the E.S.D. could have done a better job with the transition of these changes.     Maybe not telling certain teachers there hours are being cut by more than half during class time.    Certain administrators have been very unprofessional in the Evansville School District.

But it is also very unprofessional of the teacher’s in the Evansville School district to bitch and complain to students, not all teacher’s have done this but too many have.

It’s time to move forward and stop disrupting the education of our students.

I will end with changes in education need to be made but Gov.Walker went about it in the wrong way.

Evansville School Board Meeting Tonight 01/14/2013

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , on January 14, 2013 by chasinthenews

There are several things on tonight’s agenda that we should be paying attention to.

1.  Open enrollment is Feb4th- April 30th.  This time frame loses some of what it used to mean because students can now open enroll at any time during the year, under the exception application.  If you child enrolls during Feb 4th- April 30th 2013  your student would start next fall in their  new school if approved.    New laws have made it very hard for the residential school to deny applications.  Almost impossible.

*** IF you are denied during the Feb 4th- April 30th it is much easier to fight and appeal , than the rest of the year.

2.  They will discuss the administrative contracts and salaries.

NOW last year during budget talks the administrators dared to come to the school board suggesting slashing hours, pay and benefits of the teacher’s aides.   REALLY?

IF the administrators are going to suggest such things they better be ready to take a pay cut them selves.   Teacher’s aides play a very important role and they are treated not so nicely. They are not respected like they should be.   Often  the teacher aides do what the teacher’s refuse to do or claim they do not have the time to do.

WHAT I did not notice on this month’s agenda.  Some thing that is missing that has been there month after month.   Approval of open enrollment applications.   I had pointed out in a earlier post that students are leaving every month.   A couple of people suggested that they just automatically include that on the agenda anymore.   NO I do think so.   I think if we see it on there it’s because another student(s) has filed an application to leave the district.    The district is losing in their OWN estimation over 240,000.00 in money this year do to  students leaving.   Yet administration is yet to take it seriously.

What would you do with 240 thousand..????     I know what the school could do with some of that money.   IT’S not like they do not need that money.

IT is also Adult School Crossing Guard Recognition Week – January 14-18..    We still have a few but nearly as many as we used to.   But please remember to thank them if you see one!

IF you have issues you want to discuss with the school board , drop in at 6p.m. to discuss issues with them with out administration in attendance.  It’s nice they do this take advantage of it.
